Know Your Photo Collection’s Aspect Ratio by Wayne Hynes
As screen resolution is your display capacity, aspect ratio describes a measure of scale. It describes the relationship of width relative to height using a ratio. As an example, an aspect ratio of 4:3 specifies there are four inches of width for every three inches in height. It works identically with millimeters, inches, or feet, etc. This is exactly the same when displaying either still pictures or movies. The phrase predates our modern computer age. It means the same now as in the past.
In order to replicate an image precisely, the frame’s ratio should preferably match the ratio of the image produced in your camera. If the two are different, the screen can distort the picture, or alternatively it can slice sides off of the image to force it to fit (referred to as cropping). An alternative is usually to re-size the image, preserving the original aspect ratio, to match either the height or width of the display. This results in unused regions of the screen at the ends of the other axis.
Most typical digital cameras make 4:3 images. The same ratio was employed in older television sets. More recent widescreen televisions work using either 16:9 or 16:10. These new formats enable a panoramic effect, but getting that effect requires the camera equipment to utilize the same widescreen aspect ratio. A number of cameras and frames employ different ratios. These are not common in consumer electronics. They’re primarily for professionals and serious hobbyists. The notable point is to shun unusual formats if you don’t have a specific requirement.
Normally you wouldn’t worry about mixing the 16:9, 16:10, 4:3 formats of cameras and frames. All three are approximately the same ratio. Nonetheless, if one is forced to convert into another, mild stretching is noticeable. The most common result of mixing them is often an empty part of the frame’s display. This is either on the left and right sides of the photo, or above and below it, to show it centered, and with expected proportion. It’s only unsatisfying if there’s a substantial difference between the aspect ratios of the display and the photo.
It’s worth examining the photo re-size options that come with the particular Photo Frame you are looking at. A severe lack of picture re-size alternatives applies to only a tiny number of popular Digital Photo Frames. These few frames don’t allow picture cropping. Some don’t maintain the actual aspect ratio of your re-sized images. They’ll force an aspect ratio conversion into what the frame expects. If both aspect ratios were the same already, this kind of conversion works correctly. If they are different, your happiness with the image stretching, even if slight, isn’t likely. It is particularly displeasing if this distorts the display of your whole photo collection.
There are reasons to get this kind of digital photo frame, providing you are willing to edit your photo gallery prior to copying to the photo frame. These kinds of frames often offer decent trade-offs, such as a better than usual resolution, or a lower price, or both. Viewsonic’s 10.2 inch frame, reviewed here is an example. Photo-editing each photo can be a significant amount of work. It might be cost-effective, but it’s usually only satisfactory if you know about the resizing limitations before buying the frame.
