Framing Timeless Black and White Photography
Black and
white photographs are timeless. They exist for more than a hundred and fifty
years already, and are still in use today. Black and white photography has
blended in with several decorating techniques, making it just as popular as it
was back in the day. As chemicals and processes used in developing photos have
changed and despite the introduction of digital photography, current black and
white photos still look virtually the same as before.
There are
many ways to frame black and white photographs. It all really depends on
personal tastes. Some people prefer the picture frame plain and simple to give
emphasis to the photograph. Others prefer more elaborate framework to
complement the photograph. Some people like the firm two-toned approach to add drama
and sophistication. However, some people want more color in the framework for
an eye-drawing appeal.
There is so
much diversity in black and white photography that no single framing style will
work for them all. For example, an immaculate white frame is a popular choice
among framers. They say that it does not derogate from the photograph itself. However,
if the photograph’s focal point is white, the immaculate white frame now starts
to contend the photograph.
Generally,
frames are grey, white, or black. Because the photograph is black and white,
color only adds a factor that is not originally present in the photograph. In
any case if color is really insisted upon, a good option would be colored unique
picture frames with
grey or black accents, serving as a transition to the photograph. Coloring the
frame in vice versa would only drag attention away from the photograph. Black
and white photos are secluded when framed in color, giving the photo the emphasis.
Just like
framing any piece of artwork, unique picture frames used must complement with the mood
and style of the photograph. Consider the setting, style and era of the
photograph when choosing moulding. Some framers would suggest basic frames
only, but this may not always complement the photo and just make the whole
thing look cheap.
Other tactics like
adding a mount slip tol match the moulding can enhance a photograph’s look.
Some widen the top and bottom parts of the frame to make the photograph look
elongated. Nevertheless, when using

or other kinds of
frames, it should complement and add value to the black and white photograph.
